Here at Red Sail
Sports Grand Cayman, we're fortunate enough to enjoy the famous stingrays year
round. Not everyone is so lucky, however, which is why London commuters were
treated to a surprise visit earlier this week. A visit, that is, of the chalk
variety! The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism in the UK employed local
artists to create seascapes on the city's sidewalks, with our most famous
attraction, Stingray City, taking centre stage.
The murals,
which will be traveling across London in the coming weeks, are aimed at
promoting tourism to our fair island, especially as a way to beat those
freezing UK winters. Passersby were encouraged to pose for photos
"kissing" the rays, which according to Cayman folklore brings to
kisser seven years of good luck. Uploading the pictures to social media using
the hashtag "#caymankissed" also entered Londoners into the draw to
win free scuba diving lessons.
The travelling
murals also showcase Cayman's other most famous attraction - our diving! Coral
heads in full bloom, lively tropical fish, and curious scuba divers peering
from behind sea fans will be popping up around some of London's most iconic
sites, including Westminster Bridge, beneath The Gherkin, and at South Bank's
Sea Life London Aquarium. Many in the UK are unaware of all that Cayman, a
British overseas territory, has to offer, from scuba diving and watersports to
some of the finest culinary experiences in the Caribbean.
Don McDougall,
Regional Manager of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism in the UK, hopes
that this promotional effort will change that. "It’s wonderful to see some
of the iconic elements of Cayman here in London, against the backdrop of such
recognisable views such as Westminster Bridge. Seeing a slice of Cayman in the
capital just reiterates the fact that the Cayman Islands have some of the most
breath-taking seascapes and marine parks in the world, which is complemented by
an abundance of activities; from sunset sailing or diving, to visiting the
famous Stingray City. We want the British public to be able to experience a
little bit of Cayman here in London and inspire them to come and see the real
thing for themselves," said McDougall.
